HARPER CONTINUED WALKING, being careful to stick to the most darkened streets where the streetlamps were broken and porch lights were left off. The cold air filled her lungs with every breath she took. Dogs howled in the distance. A feral cat ran past her feet. She almost reached for it but held back and then instantly regretted it. The hunger and craving for blood were starting to consume her. The dizziness and weakness were beginning to take over her body. Her movements were beginning to slow. She tried to push the feelings of hunger aside as she soldiered on in her mission. Finding Quentin was the most important thing. She would have to be strong now. Suddenly, she thought she heard footsteps behind her, but she saw no one when she turned around. Everything was dark, still, and quiet. It reminded her of those moments she had had when she was still human, those moments of feeling as if someone was watching her, but no one was ever there. Then she remembered how Nikolai had told her how he had watched her for months before he rescued her from the water. Was someone watching her now? Had someone followed her from the house? Was it Nikolai or Dac, and she just couldn’t see them? There was no time to worry about such things now. She held a tighter grip on the knapsack that hung from her shoulder and picked up her speed.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, she found herself inside Zaine’s apartment. The apartment was dark and quiet, but she could hear Zaine breathing in the back room. She dropped her knapsack on the floor, stood at the end of the short hallway, and whispered for him to come to her. She heard him rise from the sleep in which she had awoken him. He stood quietly at the other end of the hall just outside his bedroom door. Harper motioned for him to come closer. Obeying her command, he stepped slowly towards her, stopping only inches away from where she stood. He looked into her captivating eyes that glowed in the pure darkness of the room. He whispered her name, “Harper,” and reached his hand out and touched her face. She placed her hand on his cheek in response. The smell of blood that coursed through his veins was compelling now that he stood so close to her. The warmth of his flesh was inviting against the coldness of her own skin. The hunger grew inside her, and her hatred for Zaine began to take over all her senses. A cloudiness had formed over her mind, and she’d almost forgotten why she had come here. Then in a brief moment of clarity, she realized she need not ask him any questions at all. She could get all the answers she needed from him without saying a word.

She ran her hand down the side of his face under his chin and around the back of his neck. She held him in a tight grip.
